How to get inspired from everyday things.

inspirationI have talked to quite a few designers, whether it be painters or marketing creators. I have also pondered on the subject of inspiration myself, what is it, what makes me tic. So last night i think i came up on a very intriguing thought. The more i have listened to artists talk about their inspirations the more i get a similar answer “I get inspired by everything”. Now at first that may make you think O.K. sure they get inspiration from everything. But last night i saw a website (hi.im) and the design just spoke to me, it spoke to me so much i sat down and designed, i made a couple of great templates. Then i went back to the website to figure out why it inspired me so much, i saw some interesting button reflections, some intriguing background choices, nothing out of the ordinary but together a rather sweet combination. Then i started to think about elements of other designs that have really stuck around, for example the differently colored circles that are sometimes blurry (you know what im talking about right, check out enavu.com) and i remember seeing those in the beginning of a movie Edit 2 Hrs Later: the effect is called Bokeh. Then i thought about the sweet white glare that websites even today use so much, that glare i have personally seen on glassy surfaces… hmm i’m starting to see a pattern. Things you might not usually perceive as usable elements in a website or some sort of artwork can become great elements. I guess what I am trying to say is, if it looks good to your eye it is most likely something you can use. Inspiration comes from observation, for example i can sometimes get inspired by seeing a purple painted house that has yellow windows, i actually have to admit to something, sometimes i try to grab the color picker from photoshop and grasp those two colors that work so well together. So get out a little more, and observe, not just to pleasure your eyes but to find the next best thing in design elements there are plenty out there no one thought about.
